What we do

Volunteer literacy tutors

To become a Voluntary Adult Literacy Tutor you are required to attend and complete an Initial Tutor Training Course. The initial training course is 26 hours and tutors can choose to have their training accredited by the Waterford Institute of Technology.  The following aspects of literacy work will be covered.

  • Causes and extent of the Irish literacy problem
  • How adults/children learn
  • Techniques involved in the teaching of reading and writing to adults
  • Selecting and making your own materials suitable for adults
  • Planning a session and record keeping

 To achieve accreditation tutors must:

  • Complete the tutor training course
  • Have a minimum of 25 hours tuition with a student
  • Submit 3 consecutive lesson plans and a written personal reflection.
  • Commit yourself to tutoring for at least 1 year after training
  • Work with your student for one / two hours weekly.
  • All preparation is extra to this time
  • Attend a tutor meeting when requested
  • Attend in-service training when requested
  • Keep records of work completed. These are useful if for some reason you are unable to continue with your student

Tutor training courses for volunteers are run at various times.  If you are interested in signing up to our initial tutor training programme, please fill out the interest form and send via e-mail to deborah.brock@doddervalley.ie. More information: Deborah Brock, 01-4664233
